Summary
In May 2026, students at the University of California, San Diego submitted complaints regarding artwork displayed at the university’s Graffiti Art Park, alleging that some messages painted on the park’s boards included discriminatory or hateful content. The complaints raised concerns regarding Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and led the university and cross-campus student councils to discuss the operation of the campus expression space. Located in an outdoor area of campus, the Graffiti Art Park allowed students and others to create artwork on designated boards. The Graffiti Art Park had been established in 2014 after UC San Diego closed the informal “Graffiti Hall” in 2013. Following the complaints, UC San Diego and student representatives considered potential changes to the management of the Graffiti Art Park, including additional monitoring, relocation of the boards, and reinforcing that the boards were temporary surfaces subject to repainting.
